‘Police Academy’ Marathon More Painful Than Actual Marathon
/A local couple on Sunday made it about three-quarters of the way through a movie marathon before giving up, Dumb Runner has learned, declaring the effort “more painful than a real marathon.”
The couple, who asked to be identified only by their first names, are both longtime runners and veterans of multiple marathons. Their movie marathon consisted of the first four films in the “Police Academy” franchise—1984’s “Police Academy,” 1985’s “Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment,” 1986’s “Police Academy 3: Back in Training,” and 1987’s “Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.”
The movies feature Steve Guttenberg as one of several misfits who join the police academy of a large, crime-ridden city and clash with their straitlaced instructor. Ribald humor and slapstick comedy ensue.
“The first (movie) wasn’t that bad,” said Brenda, a four-time marathon finisher. “After that, though, things started to get rough.”
“We were taking more and more breaks,” said Brenda’s husband, Ted. “And every time we paused, it was harder to resume watching.”
By the time the credits of the third installment rolled, Brenda said, they knew they were done.
“It was excruciating,” she said. “I’ve never DNFd a marathon before, but the pain was just too much.”
“I don’t know how people who watch all seven of these things do it,” added Ted.
At last report, the couple were in bed recovering from their effort.
