A local girl still believes in a wide range of fantastical things, from the tooth fairy to unicorns, Dumb Runner has learned—and her faith extends to fall 2020 marathons.

“I know the tooth fairy is real, because I lost a tooth last month and she came to my house and took the tooth and left me a dollar,” said Wendy Darling, age 5, in a Skype interview, pronouncing tooth as toof. “And my friend, Peter, says he saw a unicorn once. With his own eyes!”

Wendy paused to perform a little pirouette.

“Also, this fall’s marathon season will go on as planned,” she said. “Chicago, New York, Marine Corps… all those things.”

Asked why she believes that, given the lack of a coronavirus vaccine and the nation’s still-inadequate testing capacity, Wendy shrugged.

“Just do,” she said. “Wanna see my missing tooth?”

Wendy’s father, George Darling, called his daughter’s faith “so cute,” but said it can also be heartbreaking.

“I do struggle sometimes with that,” he said. “On one hand, I want to preserve her innocence as long as I can; on the other, sooner or later she’s going to find out that there’s no way in hell we’re having a normal fall marathon season.”

“Do I tell her that now?” he said. “Or do I wait till she hears it from one of her little friends?”

“It’s hard.”

He then excused himself, saying his daughter was calling him away to search for fairies in their garden.
