Boston Marathoners Starting to Think Bus Driver Lost

Runners en route to Hopkinton, Massachusetts, for the start of today’s Boston Marathon are beginning to think their bus driver may be lost, Dumb Runner has learned.
The runners, all of whom are in the fourth and final wave of the marathon’s start, boarded the bus on Charles Street, between the Public Garden and Boston Common, beginning at 8:55 a.m. The bus closed its door promptly at 9:30 and departed for Hopkinton, a 30-to-40-minute drive west.
Spirits were high, sources on the bus reported, but things went awry almost immediately.
“The driver circled the block a couple of times, then appeared confused,” said one runner who asked not to be named. “We wound up at the airport.”
Logan International Airport is east of Back Bay, where runners boarded the bus.
Once the driver realized his mistake and headed west, sources said they were confident that they would arrive in Hopkinton with time to spare. That confidence dwindled as the driver made a bewildering series of exits, detours, and U-turns.
Hours later, the bus was still on the road and the runners on board feeling increasingly uneasy.
“I don’t think we’re in Massachusetts anymore,” one passenger said, describing the passing landscape as “arid, desolate, and full of mesas.”
“This guy might be lost,” said another. “Don’t think he wants to admit it.”
Wave 4 runners start their race shortly after 11 a.m. Eastern.
