A local man who saves his retired running shoes “for yard work and stuff” now has 18 such pairs of shoes, Dumb Runner has learned.

Carl Spackler, 71, reached the milestone last weekend when he tossed a five-month-old pair of ASICS Nimbus shoes into a cardboard box in his garage. The box already contained half a dozen old pairs of running shoes, sources said; in addition, Spackler has eight pairs of shoes in a backyard shed, two pairs in a hall closet, and one pair in the trunk of his car.

All have been earmarked for lawn care and other outdoor chores.

Reached for comment, Spackler told Dumb Runner that he prefers saving his old running shoes over washing and donating them, or taking them to his local running store, which collects old shoes to be recycled.

“They come in handy here at home,” he said. “You know, for yard work and stuff.”
